I'm rather intreged what software is being used, because the fonts have antialias. I'm going to swing between either Paint.NET or GIMP. (I would mostly suspect the latter because GIMP is more complicated interface) From that I could give further advice and whatnot.
It would nice to see, rather than stick figurines to see more fleshed out characters. The sooner you get into doing that, the sooner you get better at it. I used to be at your stage at one point and it was exteremely difficult to jump from one to the other. Regardless, I like the enthusiasm put towards this. Such things are a nice way to spend time and the chuckles are worth it.
